Our history using successfully virtualization

Industria: Education

Customer’s profile:
Universidad de Las Americas Puebla (UDLAP), which was founded in 1940 is located in Cholula Puebla. Its reputation is known in Mexico and abroad, always following the task of innovating in all areas, especially in top of the line technology, due to the importance it has for the institution.

Challenges
— Upgrade their servers.
— Reduce costs.
— Consolidation of infrastructure, adopt virtualization solutions by combining it with existing technology.
— Make use of the Hybrid Cloud.

Solutions
— Microsoft ® Windows Server ® 2008 R2.
– Microsoft® Hyper-V.
— Microsoft® System Center.
— Microsoft® SQL Server® 2008.

Benefits
— Savings on licences, hardware and maintenance.

— Reduction of the initial investment cost of the renovation of its infrastructure ¡n approximately 70% (equipment purchase).
– Cost reduce at your DataCenter on electrical energy and cooling systems of about 80% annually.
— Release of physical space in your datacenter from  134 to 36 physical servers.
— Cost reduction in server management by nearly 35% (staff).
— Increased agility of the IT department in the provisioning of new servers to swift, improve and meet all of their requirements. (50% or more systems running reports or databases).
— Supporting, more efficiently, the processing “hotspots” for the different stages of the
University, setting up a brand new way of distributing the computing systems.

We again concluded that Microsoft was the way to go, not only for its costs but also for the integration it has with its other applications.‘In only a few months, Hyper-V, is giving us the first benefits, performance has improved dramatically, as well as the cost, 1m saving about 80% of costs in light, air conditioned and on the operators areas too.”Fernando Thompson de la Rosa

This decision added peace of mind with a staff team conformed with university,  personnel wich are responsible of carrying out the migration of the virtualization process successfully and which was made by Microsoft,
HP and EMC, strategic partners whose experience and capability demonstrated, thus the beginning of the implementation process and updated the cases of Windows Server 2008 R2, Hyper-V, SQL Server 2008 R2 and System Center.

“Right now, with the virtualization of our technology, we can restore the database on one side and also the virtual machine that has the application, which has the latest configuration, version and patches on an operational level system.”
Alberto Augusto Manzanilla Hernández

QUITE A GREAT IMPLEMENTATIONA great part of the success of this project was its implementation process, which was meticulously planned and cared, and, of course, the awesome advantages that Microsoft tools represent.
The success of the implementation was quite a great implementation, it even enable us to migrate the database, controllers, corporate portal, without any problem, and today, even though we have many different users, the general acceptance has been excellent, starting with the engineers in charge of the infrastructure area and systems architecture, college, administration, and even, students themselves, giving us and average total of approximately 10,000users.It is worth mentioning that the implementation time was way less than expected.

QUALIFYING THE EARLY MONTHS
Despite having a few months their implementation, major benefits have not been long in coming as a radical improvement in their performance and costs, a decrease of 80% on our lighting costs and air conditioning, a better application performance, time reduction of 50% and more systems running databases and other savings that have to do with licensing, hardware and maintenance, only to name a few.
‘Were looking at a great improvement in application performance, we had input, for example, reports that took about two hours to be generated due to the volume of information they contained, in only 40 minutes, presenting a time reduction of 50% or more in the number of systems running on data bases.”  Alberto Augusto Manzanilla Hernández

Fernando Thompson estimates that a six-number saving could be reached in less than three years. Even if the already met goals are quite a lot, knowing the full potential of this Microsoft tool, makes them think it is only operating around only 10% of its total capability.

The vision of the UDLAP is to always rely on the top of the line technologies, so working along with Microsoft; it has taken the task of providing its users, specialized tools in each area.Mr. Fernando Thompson, Managing Director of IT says that 99% of the platforms available to the University are made up of Microsoft solutions such as Live, SkyDrive, MSN, Office, SharePoint, Microsoft Dynamics, SQL Server, only to name a few, and where integration makes them a very strong ally and can design, in a very fast form, with scores of multidirectional solutions.

EVALUATING DECISIONS
The University used to have 134 physical servers which were running all critical applications and systems like their student records, databases, CRM, etc., which besides of being in a state of complete obsolescence, indirect costs were increasing gradually, that’s why we decided to evaluate safe and reliable solutions that could renew our equipment, reduce costs and whose benefits were tangible at short term.
A HYBRID CLOUDAnother very important and interesting thing is the way in which they are handling the Hybrid Cloud, because the University of the Americas is perfectly combining its private cloud with the public one that Microsoft provides with ongoing management through active directory service which are hosted on their own site. This process is very interesting and useful as it not only uses an e-mail service but also the integration of other applications such as SkyDrive.“The truth ¡s that we changed completely the way the administration takes place at the center management, initially we used to make the administration of 134 servers individually. In a virtual environment you’re able to do it in a centralized way.”   Alberto García Caraveo

SAFETY AND RELIABILITYAny existing taboo has been wiped out now, issues such as security and reliability having information in the cloud, even today, represents no security threats in the University, on contrary, it has been described as “great one of the things that has allowed them to keep their portal up and running.

HONORABLE MENTION
It has been such a pleasant implementation, that some of UDLAP leading figures do not hesitate to recommend, Microsoft tools to other IT managers, institutions or companies.

Its confidence and satisfaction are so reliable that even Mr. Fernando Thompson makes an open invitation to meet them on the campus of the Universidad de Las Americas Puebla‘Here we can share widely with you all that is needed, we are an open house to share these experiences because the more successful projects are running in our country, the better it will be.”

As usual a joke, also in english:
An email note:

An Illinois man left the snowballed streets of Chicago for a vacation in Florida. His wife was on a business trip and was planning to meet him there the next day. When he reached his hotel, he decided to send his wife a quick e-mail.

Unable to find the scrap of paper on which he had written her e-mail address, he did his best to type it in from memory. Unfortunately, he missed one letter, and his note was directed instead to an elderly preacher’s wife whose husband had passed away only the day before. When the grieving widow checked her e-mail, she took one look at the monitor, let out a piercing scream, and fell to the floor dead.

At the sound, her family rushed into the room and saw this note on the screen:

Dearest Wife,

Just got checked in. Everything prepared for your arrival tomorrow.

Your Loving Husband.

P.S. Sure is hot down here.
